A 24-year-old man was killed and another was injured in the gang-infested Lyari area.

The body and the injured man were shifted to the Civil Hospital where the victims were identified as Zahid Shaikh, resident of Landhi, and Mohammed Wasim.

Baghdadi police said that gangsters belonging to the Ghaffar Zikri and Rahman Dakait groups exchanged heavy fire near Kambela Chowk and fled when the police reached the spot.

They said that the dead and injured men both belonged to the Zikri group.

Tension gripped parts of the area as shopkeepers pulled down their shutters and vehicular traffic disappeared from the streets.

The police said they had intensified patrolling in the affected areas.

Shootout

A suspected robber was killed and his alleged accomplice arrested following a shootout with police in Hingorabad.

Gulshan-i-Iqbal police said two dacoits held a man, Shah Zeb, hostage at gunpoint to snatch his cellular phone.

In the meantime, they said, a police patrol spotted the robbers and moved towards them. The police said the dacoits opened fire when they saw the law-enforcers approaching. They said the policemen also retaliated and hit one of the robbers.

They said the deceased robber was identified as Shams and his arrested accomplice as Tariq.
