KARACHI, June 17: Four people, including a constable, were shot dead on Tuesday in different parts of the city.

Tension and panic gripped the mafia-infested Lyari after gangsters opened indiscriminate fire in different localities of Lyari. At least one man was killed and six others were wounded in the sporadic firing.

Area people said gangsters belonging to the Rahman Dakait group opened fire on a police team near the Jangiyan Hotel, where they had gone to set up a kiosk in the afternoon.

They said the police retreated as the gangsters intensified firing from the narrow lanes.

The driver of a bus was killed and his conductor wounded when unknown culprits opened fire on their vehicle.

The driver and the injured conductor were identified as Mohammed Salim and Asim, respectively.

The other injured included Aimna, 40, Tariq, 25, Shakir Ali, 25, Shah Ji, 40, Zamir, 25, and Sakina, wife of Saleh Mohammed.

Constable shot dead

A 40-year-old constable was shot dead in front of his house in Korangi.

Korangi Industrial Area police said victim Jahangir Azam, son of Adam Khan, was sitting outside his house (14/ 36-C) in Korangi 5 in the morning when unknown gunmen on two bikes sprayed him with bullets.

They said the victim, who was posted as driver in the department, died on the spot.

SHO Inspector Kamran Aslam said that apparently it was a case of targeted killing. “Personal enmity cannot be ruled out, though the motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained,” he added.

The police said the victim, father of five, hailed from the NWFP.

A case against unknown assailants was registered on the complaint of the victim’s brother Fazal Qadir.

Trader killed

A 32-year-old trader of auto spare parts was killed near the Katchi Memon Jamaatkhana.

The victim, who was fatally wounded, was brought to the Civil Hospital, where he was identified as Shahzad Salim.

Eidgah police registered a case against four brothers on the complaint of the victim’s brother, Azam.

The complainant reported to the police that his brother had gone to visit Ghulam Qadir to settle a monetary dispute with him.

He said his brother was fatally wounded when Ghulam Qadir with his brothers -- Haji Qasim, Abdul Majeed and Abbas -- opened fire on him.

Meanwhile, a 38-year-old man was killed and a 30-year-old man was injured in a firing incident in Site.

Initial reports said the firing took place near the Siemens roundabout.

The dead and the injured, identified as Bahadur Khan and Allah Ditta, respectively.
