KARACHI, June 1: Police have arrested two teenaged sons of Pakistan Muslim League-Q leader, Altaf Unnar, along with his nephew and driver in Defence and booked them on the charges of robbery and illegal use of arms.

Area police claimed that they moved on a complaint by the neighbour of the arrested persons though the Unnar family and the PML-Q alleged the fresh arrest was a ‘part of ongoing political vendetta by the government against opposition parties.’

“There was a complaint by their neighbors in Khayaban-i-Mujahid of the Defence area,” said a police official at Darakhshan police station, where the four arrested persons have been locked up.

He said an FIR (244/2008) was registered on a complaint of Fawwad, a neighbour of Mr Unnar, who alleged that his sons – Adeel Unnar and Adil Unnar – had been harassing his servant for the last few days and finally on Friday night snatched Rs2,500 from him at gunpoint.

“The two other persons arrested on identification of the complainant include Sikander Zulqarnain, a nephew of Altaf Unnar and Nawab, their driver,” he added.

However, the Unnar family claimed that police acted on the directives issued from the Bilawal House where Khalid Shahanshah was misusing his links with the ruling party.

“Both the sons of Mr Unnar are innocent and are the fresh victims of political campaign against our family,” said Babu Sarwar Sayyal, spokesman for the family.

“Sixteen-year-old Adeel is a student of matriculation at Pataro. He has recently come here to spend summer vacations. His elder brother, Adil, appeared in intermediate exams a few weeks back,” he said, demanding President Pervez Musharraf, the chief justice and human right bodies in the country to intervene and save the family from political vendetta.

A former provincial minister, Altaf Unnar, has been under detention at Hyderabad Central Jail in two criminal cases. The cases against him were lodged on the complaints of the Pakistan People’s Party MNA, Dr Azra Pechuho, who is a sister of Asif Ali Zardari, under Section 13-D of the Arms Ordinance and for alleged firing on her car.

However, the police authorities said they had nothing to do with the political activism as they had reason to arrest Mr Unnar sons from their house. “We moved on a complaint from their neighbors and found signs of gunshots at the place of incident,” said SP Clifton Azad Khan.

“The complaint regarding snatching of money from the complainant’s servant has yet to be established and if they are found innocent during investigation, the court would release them,” the SP said. He said the FIR had been lodged under Sections 324 and 392 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
