KARACHI, May 9: Substitute Mahboob’s second-half strike helped 10-man PWD complete the National Challenge Cup soccer quarter-final line-up after edging past Steel Mills 2-1 at the Peoples Sports Complex on Friday.

The losers would have gone ahead but rued missing a golden opportunity in the fifth minute of the game when Mohammad Bukhsh’s penalty kick was saved by PWD goalkeeper Dilawar Khan.

But the winners didn’t make any mistake when they were awarded the penalty kick in the 42nd minute as Mohammad Ramzan slotted home from the spot past Steel Mills goalkeeper Amir Wali.

PWD went 2-0 up in the 81st minute when Mahboob came off the bench to find the cage following a blunder by Steel Mills’ custodian Amir.

Recovering from the loss and missed penalty, the losers equalised just three minutes later through Mohammad Akmal but it was too late as PWD emerged winners, although they were reduced to 10 players three minutes into injury time after marching orders to Ramzan.

Navy will meet Habib Bank at the Peoples Sports Complex, while KPT face KRL at the CDGK Stadium in Saturday’s quarter-finals.
