KARACHI, April 29: An assistant sub-inspector was arrested and booked on Tuesday for killing a homeless man in an accident in Nazimabad.

Police said ASI Pervaiz, posted at Hasan Square police headquarters, was on his way to office in a police van (SP-6632) which went out of his control and ran over a man sleeping on pavement at 9am. They said he took the body away in the police mobile and later threw it at a desolate place near Korangi Crossing.

They said some onlookers noted down the van’s registration number and informed the police about the matter. They said the ASI confessed to have killed the unidentified victim accidentally. He was also booked for attempting to hide the body, the police said.

The body was later kept at the Edhi morgue for want of identification.

Four other men were killed in separate incidents in different parts of the city on Tuesday.

A 20-year-old man was shot dead late Tuesday night in a neighbourhood of mafia-infested Lyari. Baghdadi police said that unidentified armed men gunned down the young man in a narrow lane near Arbi Masjid.

The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital. Sources in the medico-legal department said that the victim had received at least five bullets in his upper torso. Later, the body was shifted to the morgue as it remained unidentified.

In Peerabad, a 26-year-old man was found shot dead. Police said that Ibrahim, son of Haji Abdullah, had left home in the morning. His body was found at Paracha Graveyard at afternoon. Police shifted the body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Hospital sources said that he had received multiple bullet wounds in his upper torso.

Police said the victim was a resident of Mohammedpur in Qasba Colony. They said he was jobless and living with his parents.

In Khokrapar, the body of a 23-year-old man was found from a well. The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. Hospital sources said that the victim was identified as Azhar, son of Aleemuddin. However, the cause of his death had not been ascertained till our filing of this story.

A 35-year-old mason was shot dead on Tuesday in the limits of Eidgah police.

Police said Muneer, son of Khan Gul, was shot dead by two unidentified assailants on Siddique Wahab Road at 7am. The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi.

Hailing from the NWFP, Muneer was a resident of Old Muhajir Camp.

On the complaint of victim’s brother, Mukhtar, police have registered a case against unknown murderers. Police suspected personal enmity as motive behind the killing.
