KARACHI, April 28: Unknown gunmen opened fire on the house of the provincial minister for women welfare late on Sunday night.

A spokesman for Tauqeer Fatima, Hameed Bhutto, told Dawn that two suspects on a motorcycle came outside the KDA Scheme No. 1 residence of the minister, who was also inside at the time of incident.

“The attackers fled the scene after the minister’s security guards returned fire,” he added.

The spokesman said the incident was immediately reported to the police control (15) and Bahadurabad police also reached the spot. The incident coincided with a shootout between two dacoits, also on a motorbike, and their victim, who was on foot.

Police said Nauman Akbar Arian reported to the New Town police that he had an exchange of fire with dacoits near the minister’s residence.

He said he was on his way after visiting his ailing sister-in-law at the Aga Khan Hospital when the bandits tried to waylay him.

The police said a case against two dacoits was registered on the complaint of the victim after the police verified his claims.
