KARACHI, April 22: The Sindh Education Department has sought comments and advice of City Nazim Naimatullah Khan on constitution of a board of governors (BoG), headed by prominent nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, for improvement of management and development of the DJ Science College.

In an official letter to the Nazim, the Education Department stated that Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan had shown keen interest in developing the infrastructure of the college and had recently invested about Rs4 million for construction of additional classrooms and laboratory in the college.

It has requested the city government to give opinion whether it was in favour of forming a board of governors under Dr Khan, so that the matter could be raised at some official forums for consideration.

Meanwhile, scores of students of DJ College held a protest demonstration in front of Karachi Press Club against the proposed denationalization and constitution of a board of governors to run the affairs of the college.

The protesters were carrying placards inscribed with slogans to immediately halt the process of denationalizing of educational institutions in Sindh.

They also demanded Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan to establish new educational institutions, instead of getting control of old public colleges.—PPI

Our Staff Reporter adds: The Sindh Professors and Lecturers’ Association has denounced the government’s move to establish a board of governors for DJ Science College.

A meeting of the teachers’ body, with Prof Sirajuddin Qazi in the chair, said the provincial and city governments should do away with the idea as the forces behind the establishment of the BOG had no interest in the betterment of education, but they wanted to get control of the government property.

It also urged the eminent nuclear scientist to remain conscious of the development as some mischievous people outside the government wanted to exploit his name for their commercial purposes.
