RAWALPINDI, Dec 28: Pakistan Railways Friday afternoon suspended train service between Rawalpindi and Karachi for indefinite period following reports that trains were being attacked as soon as these crossed into the Sindh province.

The return of Karachi-bound Hazara Express from Khanewal back to Rawalpindi this evening prompted the Pakistan Railways to suspend the operation of passenger trains on main line to Karachi. Other trains that returned to Rawalpindi station were Tezgam, Awam Express and Jinnah Express.

A spokesman for the Pakistan Railways told Dawn that the decision to suspend rail operation between Rawalpindi and Karachi had been taken in view of the safety of passengers and railways property.

He also said the Quetta Express was attacked by protesters at the Marrir Hasan Chowk on the Murree Road on Friday. Though windowpanes of a few coaches were damaged, there was no injury to any passenger, he added.

Meanwhile, the spokesman said passenger train operations between Rawalpindi and Lahore up to Multan remained unaffected.
