MIANWALI, March 31: A special team, appointed by the Punjab governor, has completed its inquiry against District Nazim Humair Hayat Rokhri.

Sources told Dawn on Sunday that the report of the inquiry — the first ordered against a district Nazim in the Punjab — is expected to be finalized within two days or so.

Governor Khalid Maqbool had appointed Maj Fayyaz Bashir (retired) and Sibghat Mansoor to probe into charges levelled by EDO (Finance and Planning) Dr Haider Ali Shah against Humair Rokhri.

The EDO had alleged that Mr Rokhri misappropriated millions of rupees through forged bills and awarded an illegal contract for the collection of toll tax on the highways which a district Nazim could not impose.

Dr Shah had also alleged that Mr Rokhri was running the affairs of the district government with the help of his ‘goons’.

The team has checked the expenditure bills and items purchased, and recorded the statements of different officers. The statements of Dr Shah and Mr Rokhri have also been recorded.

Meanwhile, a number of district council members at a meeting condemned the attempts by “the corrupt among the bureaucracy and politicians” who were out to fail the new set up.

Leader of the house in the district council, advocate Syed Iqrar Shah, Maj Asmatullah Khan (retired), advocate Malik Muhammad Awan and UC Nazim Haji Inayatullah Khan spoke at the meeting.

They termed it as a conspiracy against the district government which has started a number of development projects. Mr Asmat said that the complainant EDO was the member of the committee which had awarded the contract for the collection of toll tax to the highest bidder.

They also claimed that not a single rupee of the district government was spent in a wrong way.
