KARACHI, Oct 17: With the mosquito menace showing no sign of going away, the deaths of three more dengue fever patients were reported amid fresh admissions of patients with febrile illness and bleeding to city hospitals on Wednesday.

According to information received by the provincial dengue monitoring cell, two women and one male patient succumbed to dengue at two different hospitals on October 15 and 16. The dengue fever-induced death toll thus rose to 11, including seven women.

Giving the details of the deaths, Dr Shakeel Mullick, Deputy Secretary of the Health Department and head of the provincial Dengue Monitoring Cell, said on Wednesday night that a young man of 19 years, resident of Malir, and a woman in her 60s, belonging to Balochistan, died at Liaquat National Hospital and Civil Hospital Karachi, respectively, during the last 24 hours ending at 3pm.

Another woman, aged 30, whose domicile could not be ascertained, died at Liaquat National Hospital on Oct 15. Patients who died at Liaquat National had tested positive for dengue fever, while the serological test report in the case of the deceased admitted to the CHK was awaited, Dr Mullick remarked.

With the latest deaths, the number of fatalities rose to six at Liaquat National, followed by the Aga Khan University Hospital (two deaths), Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (two deaths) and CHK (one death).

Those who succumbed to dengue fever belonged to DHA, Kharadar, Gulistan-i-Jauher, Azimpura, PECHS, Malir Extension, Malir, Korangi, Landhi and Balochistan.
