KARACHI, Oct 8: The Excise and Taxation department seized 750 litres of raw liquor in its campaign against producers of the contraband launched recently in Karachi and Hyderabad.

According to a press release, 1,770 litres of raw liquor was seized in Hyderabad during the campaign, launched on the directive of the Sindh Minister for Excise and Taxation Shabbir Ahmed Qaimkhani.

The drive and crackdown was ordered following the death of 45 persons who had consumed raw liquor in Karachi on Sept 20.

Nine people were arrested in Channesar Goth, Kutchery Road, Delhi Colony, Rehman Goth, Sultanabad, Manghopir, Bakra Piri, Malir, Sahib Dad Goth and Ibrahim Hyderi after recovery of the contraband from their possession.

The arrests were made by the staff of PIO/DIO offices and those of districts South, Central and Malir. Cases have been registered against the accused.

According to Mr Qaimkhani, the Excise staff in Hyderabad had also initiated legal action against those arrested with the raw liquor in that city.—APP
