Iqra claims cycling gold

KARACHI, Oct 7: Iqra Batool paddled her way to win the gold medal in the 500 metres cycle race at the ongoing 12th Special Olympics World Summer Games in the Chinese city of Shanghai on Sunday.

According to information reaching here, the Karachi-based Iqra clocked one min six seconds for the feat which is her second in as many days.

She had won a bronze on Saturday. The cycling event of the games is being held at Chong Ming Island.Tayyaba Fatima who hails from Lahore earned the bronze in the same event with a time of one min 14 seconds. She too, had captured a silver medal the other day.

Mohammad Umair Sarwar also went on to clinch his second medal, a silver medal in one km cycling. He bagged the silver medal in 500 metres on Saturday.

Pakistan’s pair of Zubi and Waqas Javed was unlucky to earn a medal as they managed fourth slot in the badminton mixed doubles’ event. However, Shehla Naz beat Jamaican opponent in three sets 21-13, 18-21, 21-19 in the girls’ singles.

In boys’ singles first round, Pakistan’s Imran Ahmad lost to Russian player in three sets; the score being 21-13, 18-21, 21-19, while Waqas Javed went down to Chinese player 16-21, 10-21.

The Pakistani basketball team continued their winning run when they chalked up 30-16 victory over Sweden. However, after enjoying 5-2 lead on resumption, the Pakistani girls lost to India 5-10 at the Lowan Basketball Stadium.

The main rounds of tennis and athletics begin on Monday, weather permitting. Rain interrupted the evening schedule of preliminary rounds of the two disciplines on Sunday.
