PESHAWAR, March 19: NWFP Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah has stressed the need for making the police system effective and responsive to people’s expectations by improving the inspection process of police stations.

He was presiding over a special meeting of the provincial cabinet here on Monday which discussed the proposed draft police ordinance 2002. The governor said that the Public Safety Commission should be a representative body of different segments of society and efforts should be made to make it an effective and viable system.

He said the core responsibility of the police was maintenance of law and order and creation of an environment where people could feel safe and secure.

Outlaws held: Police arrested 80 outlaws, including 20 proclaimed offenders, during a pre-dawn operation launched against criminals in Azakhel area on Monday.

The operation lasted till 10am, police sources said. Three DSPs, three station house officers, 400 policemen and personnel of the Central Investigation Department took part in the operation during which two armoured personnel carriers kept plying in the locality, they said.

The police also seized a large quantity of arms, including 10 Kalashnikovs, 17 rifles, 12 shotguns, 29 pistols, two hand-grenades and 1,200 cartridges.
