HYDERABAD, Sept 25: The students of Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam, who have been on hunger strike outside the press club called-off their hunger strike on the fifth day here on Tuesday following negotiations with the university administration and at the intervention of JSQM chairman, Bashir Khan Qureshi.

The university administration assured the students that all their problems would be resolved. Officials of the university including, Umed Ali Buriro, Dr Maula Bux Kumbhar, Gul Hassan Laghari and Naimatullah Laghari met the hunger strikers and assured them that their problems would be resolved.

On this assurance the students called-off their hunger strike. University officials gave glasses of juice to the hunger strikers.

The students, however, warned that they would resume their protest after Eid if their problems were not resolved.

Speaking on the occasion, Bashir Khan Qureshi, said that the students were facing many problems in all the universities but the administration was doing nothing to resolve these problems forcing the students to resort to such a protest.

He urged the heads of the universities to resolve their problems and not to victimise the students. He demanded that the grievances of the students of Agriculture University should be redressed without any delay.

Noted leftist leader, Comrade Jam Saqi also observed token hunger strike in support of the students. The Vice Chairman of JSSF, Dr Niaz Kalani, was also present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the university in a statement faxed to Dawn, said that the problems of the university students have already been resolved.

He said that the students were being provided all facilities at the campus and hostels and new buses have been purchased to provide them transportation facilities.

He said arrangements of transportation from hostel gate to Hyderabad for the students have also been made and their “All Pakistan Study Tour” has also been approved.

The spokesman said that some groups were trying to exploit the students to defame the university. He appealed to the friends of Sindh and writers to save the only agriculture university of the province.
