MARDAN: Closure of road criticised

Published September 20, 2007

MARDAN, Sept 19: The Malgarey Wakeelan of District Bar Association has expressed concern over the closure of the Punjab Regimental Centre-Baghdada road which links a large number of areas with the city and demanded its immediate reopening.

Malgarey Wakeelan president Advocate Azizur Rehman said in a press release issued here on Wednesday that the only road link between Baghdada and Mardan city had been closed by the authorities of the Punjab Regimental Centre.

The road also linked Katlang, Gujjar Garhi, Kaskuroona, Duranabad and several other union councils with the city, he said.

He said that Malgarey Wakeelan, in a meeting, had expressed anger over the closure of the road because it wasted time of people of affected area and added to their travelling expenses as they used the road to visit the district courts, post office, banks, sabzi mandi, bus stops and girls’ degree college.

He said the decision to close the route had been taken after a suicide attack on the Dargai military post.

He said the people of the areas on the suburbs of the city now had to cover a distance of 5km to reach there.

The meeting was attended by Advocates Azizur Rehman, Zahid Jmal Bacha, Naveed Khan, Ubaid Razzaq, Uzair Shah, Syed Rehman, Badshah Rehman Mehmand and S.M. Riaz.

They said they would approach the courts if the road was not re-opened for local people immediately.
