RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 15: A jubilant France team once again found itself among the medal winners as Cuba, Brazil and Georgia grabbed their share of gold on the second day of the World Judo Championships here late Friday.

France woke up Saturday to discover a new king of the tatami following the stunning victory of teenager Teddy Riner over Russia’s Tamerlan Tmenov in the final of the men’s +100 kg - considered the most prestigious category.

On the second day France claimed a further three medals, Gevrise Emane beating American Ronda Rousey by yuko to claim gold in the women’s -70kg category for her maiden world title.Defending world champion Lucie Decosse, an Olympic bronze medal winner in Athens, battled through four bouts to get to the women’s -63kg category final.

But in the end the diminutive blond had to settle for silver after falling to koka at the hands of Cuban Driulis Gonzalez, who won the gold.

Anthony Rodriguez meanwhile gave the French hopes of a third gold medalfrom two days of competition when he made it to the final in the men’s -81kg category.—AFP
