KARACHI, Sept 6: Some 30 colleges across the city, which produced a zero per cent pass percentage in this year’s HSC examinations, have been asked by the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) why they should not be disaffiliated from the board, while 18 other colleges that produced less than 10 per cent passing grades have been asked the reasons for their poor performance.

BIEK Chairman Anwar Ahmed Zai said on Thursday that he had taken serious notice of colleges and higher secondary schools whose students did not perform well in this year’s HSC-II examinations.

“We are issuing notices to these institutions to provide us the reasons for the dismal performances of their students, before taking action against them in line with the Board’s rules,” he said.

An analysis of this year’s result shows that 195 colleges and higher secondary schools from both the public and the private sectors sent 16,962 students to take the HSC-II (pre-medical) examinations 2007. Of these, 52.3 per cent of the students passed the examination.

Apart from 48 institutions with zero to ten per cent success rates, 49 institutions had less than 20 per cent while 28 had less than 50 pass percentage. However, 72 institutions got over 50 per cent successful results while the remaining nine had a hundred per cent success rate.

“We will award these nine institutions merit certificates and medals for their principals,” said Mr Zai.
