Musharraf urged to quit

Published August 28, 2007

LAHORE, Aug 27: Pakistan Jamhoori Tehrik convener Safdar Siddiqui says President Pervez Musharraf has been left with no other option but to quit and hand over power to the Senate chairman as provided by the Constitution.

In a statement issued here on Monday, he said the writing on the wall was clear as the times had changed and there was no alternative but the transfer of power to the people.

He said the process of establishment of sovereignty of the people could not be stopped now. He said the acting president would be required to form a caretaker government with the consent of all political parties and hold fair elections.

He also demanded that a new independent election commission with all necessary administrative and financial powers should be appointed to ensure fair elections.

He said the new assemblies should elect the new president as it would be unconstitutional for the outgoing assemblies to do so.
