KARACHI, Aug 27: The city government is likely to notify official rates for milk at production, wholesale and retail stage, for which a meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday.

On July 17, the city government acting upon a directive from the Sindh High Court formed a 15-member committee to carry out a fresh exercise to fix the milk price in accordance with the provisions of the Sindh Essential Commodities Price Control and Prevention of Profiteering and Hoarding Act, 2006.

EDO Enterprise and Investment Promotion Hasan Naqvi told Dawn that the DCO Karachi, who was also the Price Control Officer, would finalise the milk price in the Tuesday meeting in the light of the recommendation put forward by the 15-member committee, comprising government officials, representatives of dairy farmers and members of civil society organisations, set up for the purpose.

He said that the committee’s finding, sequence of its meetings and the new notification would be submitted before the high court in compliance of the court’s earlier directives.

Sources said that the committee held seven meetings to work out a ‘just and fair’ price structure, at production, wholesale and retail levels, but the city government authorities and the representatives of milk-sellers could not evolve a consensus.
