KARACHI, Aug 21: A third policeman was targeted within a week in Lyari on Tuesday, when he was ambushed and wounded by gunmen. He is stated to be fighting for life in the ICU of the Civil Hospital.

In Tuesday’s incident at least six persons, including two schoolchildren and a woman schoolteacher, were wounded when a head constable was ambushed by unknown young men near his Baghdadi home.

HC Mumtaz Junejo, 35, was heading to work after bringing home his children from school as was his daily routine. Moments after he had dropped the children at the apartment building’s staircase, he was attacked by about seven gunmen.

Lyari SP Fayyaz Khan said Mr Junejo sustained three bullet wounds in the chest.

In the shootout, at least six persons, including two pupils Rajab Ali, 8, and Kulsoom, 16; schoolteacher Ruqayya, 35, Sher Muhammad, 22, and Saeed Muhammad, 55, also sustained gunshot wounds.

The incident occurred on D.D. Chaudhry Road near the Lyari Telephone Exchange.

Mr Junejo underwent two operations and was shifted to the ICU, SP Khan said.

The other wounded persons were be in a stable condition. Some of them had suffered minor injures, police said.

“He was previously posted in the CID and is currently serving as a head constable in the Baghdadi police station. He was instrumental in gathering information about outlaws Ghaffar Zikri, Baba and Jaingo,” the Lyari SP said.
