KARACHI, Aug 19: The central chairman of the Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Mallah Tanzeem, Mohammad Arab Mallah has urged the Sindh chief minister to convene a meeting of the Sindh’ fishermen and fisheries’ officials, said a statement issued here on Saturday.

He said that the main objective of the meeting would be to come up with solutions to the problems being faced by the fishing community.

He said that Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim was keen to resolve the problems of the fishermen and had also made an announcement in Badin on April 21, 2007 while speaking at a public gathering that the contract system of fresh waters in Sindh would be abolished and licences would be awarded to allow fishing in fresh waters at different locations.

Mr Mallah said that thirty-three suggestions were also forwarded to the secretary fisheries on the advice of the Sindh chief secretary for resolution of problems of Sindh’s fresh water fishermen.

He said that licences to allow fishing mainly at five specific locations would help improve the economic condition of the fishermen of the province.—APP
