Woman set at liberty

Published August 2, 2007

LAHORE, Aug 1: Justice Syed Asghar Haider of the Lahore High Court on Wednesday set a woman at liberty who was detained by her Christian parents and former husband. She later decided to go with her Muslim spouse.

The woman, Nasim, had married Aslam and gave birth to a child. She embraced Islam on Jan 3, 2007.

Later, she contracted marriage with a Muslim youth, Muhammad Husain, on May 14.

However, she was returned to her Christian family reportedly through a punchayat on June 26.

Husain filed a habeas corpus petition with the LHC, which directed the police to recover and produce Nasim in the court.

Nasim’s former husband Aslam, his mother and her sister also appeared before the court. Nasim, when produced in the court, stated before the learned judge that she wanted to go with her Muslim husband, the petitioner.

The petitioner’s counsel Mehmood Ahmad Alwari says Nasim had completed her iddat (over four-month period which a Muslim widow or divorcee had to spend before contracting another marriage). — Staff Reporter
