KARACHI, July 28: A labourer died and six others were injured on Saturday when gases accumulated in an empty oil tanker exploded while the men were painting the tanker’s interior walls in Baldia Town.

Police said that although the tanker was old and empty, accumulated fumes of oil remnants may have reacted with gases emanating from the paint, even though the tanker’s hatch had been open. They conjectured that one of the labourers may have lit a cigarette which sparked off the gases.

The deceased was identified as Iqbal, 35, while his colleagues escaped with burns. The injured men and the body were sent to a hospital.
