Benazir stands to lose: Qazi

GUJRANWALA, July 27: Muttahidda Majlis-i-Amal president Qazi Hussain Ahmed warned Benazir Bhutto that her party would not be able to get public support for Gen Musharraf’s `sinking ship’.

“PPP’s deal with Musharraf will be like wasting the sacrifices of the people during the four-month-long drive for the independence of judiciary,” he said in response to reports of Benazir-Musharraf meeting in the UAE.

Talking to newsmen at Jamia Arabia here on Friday and in a statement issued from Lahore the same evening, he said the meeting was a last ditch of US-sponsored effort to save Musharraf.

He said PPP leader’s dual policy now stood exposed and she would lose public support in future.

Holding` the US responsible for the growing instability in Pakistan, the Jamaat amir said any future set-up in Islamabad under the influence of Washington would lead to more instability in Pakistan.

The MMA president declared the United States an open enemy of the nation and asked the people to get united.

Talking about his resignation from the NA, Qazi said it was his own decision.

“I have shown the way to other opposition parties.”

The government, according to him, wanted to postpone the coming general election. He said Friday’s disturbances in Islamabad had been manoeuvred by intelligence agencies to close the Lal Masjid for ever. He expressed shock over human loss in the Aabpara blast.
