HYDERABAD, July 27: District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil has said that work on 850 development schemes in the district is proceeding at a hectic pace and tens of millions of rupees are being spent on the development schemes in each union council without any exception.

He was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of a rising main laid from Affandi Town pumping station to Phulelli Canal. City Taluka Nazim Javed Jabbar, Naib Nazim Ghulam Shabbar Chishti, Wasa Managing Director Abdul Malik Khatri and nazims and councillors of different UCs were present.

The district nazim said only two filter plants had been established in Hyderabad since the creation of Pakistan which were insufficient to meet the needs of ever increasing population of the city. He said the present district government was setting up two more filter plants at Hala Naka and Paretabad at a cost of Rs740 million, which were near completion.

Mr Jamil said to provide better health cover to the citizens, the capacity of the existing 10 hospitals had been increased and six new hospitals, including an ultra-modern trauma centre, were under construction.

He said work on more than 35 parks and playgrounds continued and the Hyderabad airport, which had been lying closed for the last six years, had been reopened. He said the reopening of the airport would give a fillip to economic activities in the area and help organize sports events at international level.

He said the 24-inch diameter rising main had cost Rs10.7 million and machinery installed at the pumping station Rs1 million. In addition to this, he said, Rs3.5 million had been spent on the installation of a 250kv generator.

He said the project had been completed in a record 15-day time. He said water disposal capacity of the pumping station had been increased from 2,000 gallons per minute to 5,700 gallons per minute.
