KARACHI, July 26: Two armed guards, one from the police and the other from a private security agency, were robbed of their weapons by armed men on Thursday, as they stood on duty outside the DHA residence of a federal minister.

Darakshan police said that on street 26, phase V, Khayaban-i-Pasban, robbers held up police guard Mohammed Ismail and private guard Ilahi Bux at gunpoint, snatched their guns and sped away in a car. A case has been registered in this regard.

Residents kill ‘robber’

A suspected robber was killed by the residents of Al-Falah after he snatched cash and other valuables from a couple on Thursday.

Police said that two robbers on a motorbike intercepted Muazzam and his wife in Rafi Bungalows, within the Al-Falah police limits, and snatched jewellery and cash from them. As the robbers fled, the area’s residents were alerted by the victims’ shouts and chased after the criminals. One of the residents opened fire, as a result of which one of the thieves was wounded and fell to the ground while his accomplice escaped. The wounded man was roughed up by the area’s residents.

Upon reaching the spot, the police took the thief to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where he gave his identity as Imam Deen of Millat Town. Subsequently, he succumbed to his injuries and died. Police recovered the stolen property and a TT pistol from him.

Cop dies in line of fire

A policeman was shot dead by a robber in the Dalmia residential area on Thursday.

According to the police, four personnel of the Aziz Bhatti police station were patrolling the area on two motorcycles. Upon their approach, a man fled down the narrow lanes and was pursued by policeman Ghulam Rasool. The suspect hid in a mosque and opened fire at Rasool, who received a bullet in his face and died on the spot. The murderer managed to escape.

SP Gulshan Town Noman Siddiqui said that the policemen were on the look-out for a drug-peddler and that Rasool had lost his life in the line of duty. The remains of the deceased were sent to a hospital for autopsy and a search for the cop killer is underway.
