KARACHI, July 17: On the directives from the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the district and sessions judge Malir on Tuesday called the superintendent of the district jail Malir and informed him about the allegations levelled against him by the president and members of the Young Lawyers’ Forum (YLF).

It was reported that the President of the YLF, Riaz Affendi, and his associates, through a letter, had complained to the chief justice of Pakistan alleging that the inmates in the district jail Malir were forced to pay bribes. Those unable to do so were stripped and tortured.

The letter further stated that the convicted prisoners and police personnel were assigned the duties of collecting money from the visitors.

It was alleged that the amount taken from people was at least Rs100 for ordinary visitors, while VIPs were forced to pay up to Rs2,000 per meeting with the prisoners.

It was stated that due to severe torture many of the inmates were physically paralysed and mentally disturbed, but no action was taken against the accused.

Riaz Affendi, when contacted, said that he had submitted the proof to the court of the District and Sessions Judge Malir, Parkash Lal Ambwani, against the superintendent.

The Superintendent Malir Jail, Shakir Shah, when contacted, said that he has also produced documents in the court in his defence.

He said the allegations were baseless and he was ready to face them.

It was learnt that the court recorded the statements of both parties, and it was the court’s discretion to fix the next date for the process.
