KARACHI, July 11: Sewage water gushing out from choked lines has inundated a portion of Shah Latif Bhittai Road, a commercial route in Lyari Town. The road links the town with Saddar and Keamari towns.

It has been in a dilapidated condition for the past two years, in spite of the fact that there are several government and private schools, colleges and hospitals along the road.

Work on laying sewerage lines on the Moosa Lane portion of the road was started a few months ago, but progress has been slow, as a result of which overflowing sewage has started accumulating on the main road.

Locals say they have repeatedly reminded the authorities concerned about the chronic problem of the locality, but nothing has been done.

“Is it not amazing that whenever we bring the lingering issue of sewerage lines to the notice of the authorities, we are told that they are unable to do anything because of the paucity of funds,” an angry resident remarked.

Meanwhile, the pace of water line replacement work on D.D. Chaudhry Road in Baghdadi, a link road that connects Shah Latif Bhittai Road with Lea Market, is progressing at a snail’s pace, residents have complained.

The locality has been facing an acute water shortage since 2002 and on the persistent demand of the people, the authorities decided to replace the old lines. But the slow pace of work has irritated people, who have sent several reminders to the authorities.
