KARACHI, June 18: A large number of fishermen left their houses and migrated to safer places as seawater inundated coastal areas of Karachi. The pressure of tides increases in months of June and July when seawater enters in the coastal areas compelling fishermen residing there to shift to safer places.

The affected areas include Abdul Rehman Goth of Hawkesbay and Pin Mohalla and Dubla of Rehri in the outskirts of Karachi.

The Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum rushed to the villages and rescued some families. Tides were high in June and July, area people said, adding that their villages were submerged many times in the past but the elected representatives did not pay attention to resolve the issue. They said the embankment built 20 years back by Gabopat Union Council was weak and demanded immediate repair to avert any big loss.—PPI
