Jewellers demand protection

Published June 12, 2007

QUETTA, June 11: The Balochistan Sarrafa and Jewellers’ Association has demanded protection, saying that a gang is extorting money from jewellers in the city. The association’s president Haji Muhammad Anwar Saraf claimed at a press conference here on Monday that the Daro gang was involved in the attack on the home of jeweller Haji Abdul Salam on Saturday night, in which a member of the family was shot at. He said the gang had demanded Rs1 million from Haji Salam and on his refusal tried to kidnap his son on June 10. On resistance, a member of the family, Mohammad Shezad was injured.

He appreciated the efforts of police for arresting the accused. He said the gangsters had been blackmailing the jewellers and the government should take stern action against them.

Haji Anwar also appealed to tribal elders and political parties to help eliminate the gang.
