KARACHI, June 1: With a blend of experience and youth in their ranks, Pakistan are looking forward to bringing laurels to the nation in the 16-team 23rd Asian Snooker Championship which runs at a local hotel from June 11 to 17.

“The morale of players are high and with added home advantage they can turn the tide in favour of the hosts,” President, Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) Ali Asghar Valika told reporters at a press conference on Friday.

As many as 35 players, including five from the host nation, are to vie for honours in the weeklong spectacle which carry total prize money $4700. Besides, a sponsor has announced $100 for every century break.

According to the prize-money break-up, the winner will be awarded $2500 while runner-up will receive $1200. The third and fourth position holders will take home $600 and $300 respectively. The highest break performer will earn $100.

This is the fourth time Pakistan are playing host to the Asian meet, having conducted tournament in 1991, 1998 and 2001.

The regional competition is being held in the backdrop of world championship which was cancelled at the last moment due to earthquake in upcountry in the past.

“Pakistan is known for its traditional hospitality and we’ll leave no stone unturned in making it a great success,” Valika remarked.

The PBSA official said snooker in Pakistan had suffered ups and downs as far as sponsorship is concerned.

“We’re trying to find a long term sponsor following government restrictions on tobacco companies to restrain support from sports since last two years,” he added.

Applauding the role of Pakistan Sports Trust (PST), Valika said it has come to the PBSA’s rescue by providing a large chunk of money. The PST, it is learnt, has lent financial support of around Rs2.5 million, which is half of the estimated cost.

The local government, he said, has assured to provide security to the foreign players and delegates during their stay in the metropolis.

Representatives of co-sponsors also spoke on the occasion.
