KARACHI, May 9: City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal on Wednesday ordered a complete cleaning of the Gujjar Nullah to protect residents of the surrounding four towns -- New Karachi, Gulberg, North Nazimabad and Liaquatabad -- from spillage during the monsoon season.

He called for the removal of all obstacles in the way of sewerage flow from the four towns flushed into the nullah, which is also flooded with sewerage from Surjani Town and Manghopir.

The meeting was attended by Additional Vice-Chairmen, Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, Imamuddin Shahzad and Mohammad Moin Khan; DCO Karachi Javed Hanif, EDOs and town nazims of Gulberg, New Karachi, North Nazimabad and Liaquatabad Towns besides officials of the Water Board, Municipal Services and Transport Departments of the city government.

Referring to the miserable condition of the nullah, Mustafa Kamal observed that no such arrangements were made during the last 50 years to clean this 13-km long nullah, leading to its complete blockage, besides problems due to encroachments on both sides.

He said millions of residents, especially those living at the brinks of the nullah, have to be shifted to safer places during the rainy season to avoid any casualty.—APP
