LAYYAH, May 7: Eleven colleges in Layyah district face staff shortage and the academic carrier of thousand of students is at stake, Dawn has learnt.
There are five colleges for women and six for men in the district. Up to 40 per cent of vacancies are vacant in boys’ colleges and 66 per cent in girls’ colleges.
In Government Degree College in Chaubara 16 seats are lying vacant, Government College in Chowk Azam five seats, Government College Kot Sultan two seats, Government College in Fatehpur 13 seats, Government College in Karor eight seats and Government Post-Graduate College in Layyah 10 seats.
Similarly, in Government Girls’ College of Chowk Azam 15 seats are laying vacant, Government Girls’ College 14 seats, Government Girls’ College of Kot Sultan 19 seats, Government Girls’ College of Fatehpur 18 seats and Government Girls’ College of Layyah 11 seats.
District Officer of Colleges Jameel Qureshi says he has informed the senior officials about the staff shortage many a times, adding that he hopes the problem would be resolved in the near future.
Educationist Akram Javed Alvi called the situation a blow for the career of students. He demanded the Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi arrange teachers for the colleges to realise his claims of Phara Likha Punjab.
INJURE: Three members of the People’s Students Federation allegedly shot at and injured a fellow student for his refusal to join their organisation in the Government Polytechnic Institute here on Sunday night.
Ramzan, a Second Year student of electrical technology, told this correspondent in the surgical ward of the DHQ hospital on Monday that he was sleeping in his room in the Jinnah Hostel. His roommate Nadeem opened the door in response to a knock at around 2:30am.
As the door opened, Imran Gadhi, an office-bearer of the PSO, Imtiaz and Ali Ahamdani, entered the room. Imran opened fire on him as a result of which three of the eight bullets he fired hit him. He fell on the floor and became unconscious, he added.
He said the accused had been repeatedly asking him to join their party and he had been refusing to do so as he wanted to complete his studies.
The city police have registered a case against the three with no arrest.
It may be recalled that the Government Polytechnic Institute has been a troubled spot due to armed clashes between rival groups of students.
The students have demanded of police and authorities concerned to provide them security.
