KARACHI, May 1: There is a need to develop working relationship and link between the private and public sectors for proper disposal of the solid waste generated by the city.

These views were expressed during a meeting organised by a non-governmental organisation, Gulbahao on Monday.

Speakers on the occasion said that if recyclable material could be properly separated from the solid waste, which presently was being done partly by poor scavengers, in a planned manner the quantum of solid waste, could be minimised and the disposal of the rest of it would become comparatively easier.

The speakers also lauded the research done by the Gulbahao in recycling the waste material and coming up with innovative products from the same — like the prefabricated houses that cost as little as Rs10,000.

The speakers were of the view that the informal sector involved in collection and recycling had innovative ideas, while the formal sector like local bodies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) etc had funds and technology, if both of these worked together, the issue could be solved to a great extent.

Former Sindh Environment Secretary Shamsul Haq Memon, Ali Chaudhry, Mohammad Khalid, Asif Habib, Nuzhat Siddiqui, A. Rehman Moosvi, Sabiha Shah, Nargis Lateef and others also spoke.
