KARACHI, Feb 27: AG Sindh Raja Qureshi said on Wednesday that he had no knowledge or instructions as yet with regard to extradition of Ahmed Omar Sheikh to the US.

He was asked to comment when the prime suspect in the Daniel Pearl case will be handed to the US government. His comments nevertheless hinted that the proposition would soon become a reality.

However, on the legal plane, he emphasized that “there is such a general acknowledgment of the necessity of such extradition treaties that of late, and since the facilities for escape of criminals have so greatly increased, most civilized powers have entered into convention for mutual surrender of persons charged with most serious crimes.

“These treaties be faithfully observed and interpreted to fulfil our just obligations to other powers, without sacrificing the legal or constitutional rights of the accused,” said Raja Qureshi.

In the construction and carrying out of such treaties, the ordinary technicality or criminal proceedings are applicable only to a limited extent, he said.
