KARACHI, April 11: There was a moment of joy in the tennis fraternity when hosts Sindh recaptured women’s team event gold after a decade in the 30th National Games at the CDGK Sports Complex on Wednesday.

Second seed Sindh with three former national champions – Nida Waseem, Farah Khurshid and Nyla Khan - in her fold, edged past top seed Army 2-1 in the final to land the gold.

Wapda bt NWFP 2-0 in the playoff to secure the bronze.

Meanwhile, Wapda and Army qualified to meet each other in the men’s team event final on Thursday.

Wapda accounted for Punjab 2-0 while Army whipped PAF 2-1 in the two pre-finals on Wednesday.

Sindh bt Army 2-1.

Nida Waseem bt Sarah Mahboob 6-3, 6-4; Nyla Khan lost to Sara Mansoor 1-6, 1-6; Nida Waseem/Farah Khurshid bt Sarah Mahboob/Natasha Afridi 6-1, 6-2.

Playoff for 3rd position:

Wapda bt NWFP 2-0.

Army bt PAF 2-1.

Yasir Khan lost to Inam Gul 4-6, 4-6; Rashid Malik bt Shahzad 6-4, 4-6, 6-1; Yasir Khan/Rashid Malik bt Inam Gul/Mehmood Khan 6-2, 7-5.

Formidable Wapda swept the men’s and women’s team event crown in the National Games badminton event at the PSB Coaching Centre on Tuesday.

Defending champion and top seed Wapda disposed off second seed Punjab straight 3-0 to retain the men’s title while Wapda toppled holders Punjab 3-1 to earn the women’s gold.
