KARACHI, April 9: Eyebrows were raised in the City Council on Monday when City Nazim Syed Kamal Mustafa directly attacked the PPP leadership on the issue of water supply to Lyari area and held the party responsible.

He said despite the fact people of the town voted for the party and it came to power twice, it did nothing for the locality. This was the first time the city nazim criticised the PPP leadership in the City Council.

His remarks created a reaction among the Awam Dost Group led by Saeed Ghani and other Opposition members and tension prevailed in the house as both sides in the house traded accusations.

Condemning the city nazim’s remarks, UC Nazims of Lyari Shah Jan Baloch and Sheikh Mehbub said had the city nazim been sincere with the people of Lyari, he would not have ignored Bakhtawar Children Park in the locality.

He claimed the park had not been developed simply because it was named after the daughter of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

Later addressing a press conference, Saeed Ghani, leader of the Awam Dost Group said the nazim had tried to mislead the people by making controversial claims.

He said a Rs800 million package was announced at a public meeting in Lyari by the MQM chief but they were not unaware where the money was spent.

The leader of Al-Khidmat group, Mr Rafiq Ahmed termed the city nazim speech as full of contradictions.

He regretted that the Opposition was not being allowed to speak on vital issues.
