ISLAMABAD, April 3: President Gen Pervez Musharraf has sought the help of US Congress in removing negative perceptions about Pakistan's role in the war on terrorism.

He was talking to a three-member congressional delegation comprising Mr Silvestre Reyes, Mr John F. Tierney and Mr John McCain, who called on him here on Tuesday.

The president was of the view that a holistic approach was essential for effectively combating challenges of extremism and terrorism.

He briefed the visiting members of Congress about Pakistan's firm resolve to fight extremism and terrorism, noting that it was in Pakistan's own national interest to continue war against terrorism.

He highlighted Pakistan's contribution to international counter-terrorism efforts and stressed the need for a comprehensive strategy embracing political, military, administrative and economic dimensions.

The president underlined Pakistan's vital stake in a peaceful and stable Afghanistan and informed US delegates about the measures taken by Pakistan to strengthen control and management along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

He said the security along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border was a joint responsibility to be shared by all parties concerned. Accordingly, it was imperative for all sides to intensify mutual coordination. The president also highlighted the importance of a comprehensive plan for the repatriation of Afghan refugees in the context of enhanced security along the border.

He expressed satisfaction over the deepening of multifaceted cooperation between Pakistan and the United States.

Gen Musharraf said that Pakistan attached great importance to building a broad-based, stable and long-term relationship with the United States.
