ST PETER’S (Antigua), April 2: New Zealand compensated for the loss of two front-line bowlers on Monday by restricting Bangladesh to 174 all out off 48.3 overs in their World Cup Super Eights match.
After winning the toss and asking Bangladesh to bat, New Zealand lost Michael Mason after the medium-fast outswing bowler had bowled only nine balls. Left-arm pace bowler James Franklin then left the field during a drinks break having bowled six overs.
Mason had sustained a calf strain and Franklin was suffering from a migraine. On Saturday, Australia's Shane Watson and Bangladesh's Tapash Baisya left the field with injuries sustained on the sandy surface.
In the absence of Mason and Franklin, Jacob Oram again delivered for his team on a pitch at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium holding no terrors for the batsmen.
Oram dismissed Tamim Iqbal stumped by Brendon McCullum for 29 after an opening partnership of 55 with Javed Omar, who had replaced Shahriar Nafees
Seven runs later the tall medium-pacer accounted for Javed caught behind for 22 before Bangladesh consolidated with a partnership of 43 between Aftab Ahmed and captain Habibul Bashar.
Aftab was caught by substitute fielder Mark Gillespie on the long-on boundary off Scott Styris and Oram was again in the action when he ran out Habibul for nine taking a risky second to third man.
From the comparative respectability of 122 for three, Bangladesh slumped to 140 for nine.
Shane Bond returned to take two in an over, bowling Saqibul Hasan for 25 with his first ball and Mushfiqur Rahim for nought with his last.
Styris picked up three further cheap wickets before Mohammad Rafique gave a sprinkling of Bangladesh supporters something to applaud with an unbeaten 30. Oram ended the innings by bowling Syed Rasel for 10.
