KARACHI, April 2: The reconstruction and renovation work on one of the country’s most important thoroughfares — I.I. Chundrigar Road — would be completed in a short span of three to four months against the expected timeframe of one-and-a-half year.
This was stated by City Nazim Mustafa Kamal while talking to newsmen after reviewing the ongoing work on the project here on Monday evening. "We will try to complete this road from Merewether Tower to Shaheen Complex in next three to four months," he informed.
The nazim inspected the pace of work on a section of the I.I. Chundrigar Road, from Tower to Habib Bank Plaza, which had been dug up and closed for vehicular traffic. He said that considering peoples' problems due to the reconstruction of the road, the city government had decided to complete the task at the earliest.
To a question, the nazim said that said that all underground water and sewerage lines had already been transferred while teams of power, telephone and gas departments were busy in the maintenance and relocating their respective underground lines passing beneath Mr Kamal said that after completion, the I.I.Chundrigar Road would be a model road in the whole country. He said that the State Bank of Pakistan had formed a committee comprising representatives of all financial institutions. They managed to collect Rs220million for the construction of the road, while rest of the amount, if any, would be borne by the city government. The estimated cost of the project is Rs210 million.
He said that another advantage of the reconstruction of I.I. Chundrigar Road was that the rainwater drainage system for the old city areas including Kharadar would be restored.The nazim said that the city government had requested the Pakistan Railways for the temporary possession of Railway Ground for solving the parking problem. “They gave us a positive response but the matter would be decided by the ministry of Railways,” he added.
FIRE TRAINING: The nazim inaugurated the first fire training centre, established with the assistance of private sector in Korangi.
Speaking on the occasion, he paid tributes to the firemen who lost their lives in the line of duty.
He asked the administration of the fire centre to train the fire staff on modern lines.
