KARACHI, Feb 21: Teenager Nameer Shamsi overcome a stiff challenge from Mustafa Zaidi on way to registering victory in three sets to advance into juniors U-17 singles next round of the Sindh ranking tennis tournament which got underway at CDGK sports complex on Wednesday.

Nameer, who crowned boys U-13 title in a national ranking tournament at the same venue last month was home 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.

Nasir Mushtaq, top seed in the same juniors’ category, had a 6-0, 6-0 short work of Asadullah Khan.

The men’s singles also witnessed two interesting matches that went to full distance. Adnan Yousuf recovered after dropping the opener to post 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 win over Steve Jonathon while Rana Azmatullah downed Ahad Hassan 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Top seed Aqeel Khan who got a first round bye in a draw of 32 is drawn to meet Robin Das who accounted for Islamabad’s Faisal Mehmood 6-1, 6-3. Second seed Jalil Khan faces Hussain Jessani who reached the next round by getting a walkover against Fahim.

The ladies singles begins on Thursday with 12 contenders vying for honours.

Muneeb Khan bt M. Ali Zubair 6-0, 6-3; Nasir Mushtaq bt Asadullah Khan 6-0, 6-0; Hashim Khan bt Basit Gabol 6-0, 4-0(retd); Nameer Shamsi bt Mustafa Zaidi 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.
