KARACHI: Water cannons for police

Published October 20, 2001

KARACHI, Oct 19: The city police have obtained two fire tenders from the city government in donations, to be transformed into water cannons for controlling rioters in the city.

The transfer of the fire tenders took place after the IGP, Syed Kamal Shah, made a formal request to the City Nazim, Naimatullah Khan.

According to police sources, the water cannons will be under the newly-established Crime Investigation Department — the main body responsible for controlling crime and riots in the province.

The vehicles given by the Fire Department are Isuzu and Hino of 1986 model, lying unattended in the department’s yard along with seven other fire tenders after being involved in major accidents.—PPI
