KOHAT, Feb 3: Police claimed on Saturday to have arrested the most dangerous fugitive of more than 1,000 outlaws wanted by the Kohat police.

Aurangzeb, wanted by police in 34 murder, attempted murder and kidnapping for ransom cases since 1991, was arrested on a tip-off near Bilitang on the Rawalpindi road while he was travelling with his family in public transport. He was also wanted by the Hangu police in three cases and by the political administration of the Frontier Region in two cases.

The ASP, headquarters, Vaqas Ahmad, told journalists at a press briefing that Aurangzeb had confessed to have kidnapped a number of people, including a factory owner and a businessman in November and December 2005.

He claimed that after his arrest, the administration had been receiving calls from prominent politicians, requesting for his best treatment and time for meeting him in the lockup.

He said the accused also used to resolve criminal and other cases on payment and he had told his interrogators that more than Rs35 million worth of cases were pending with him at the moment. Since his arrest, there were 151 calls on his mobile phone from different people whose cases were pending before him for decision.

The police officer said Aurangzeb committed the first murder in 1991 over some dispute over marriages of her sisters. Then he killed a police constable and ran a group of seven criminals.

He said the accused was being kept at a safe place because of the danger of an attack on police by his gang members. Police had been asked to vacate the building where he is kept and force had been deployed only at the rooftop, he said.
