KARACHI, Jan 4: Lyari Textbook Library, the only general library in the area, reflects apathy of the relevant municipal authorities including town administration.

The library is facing a number of problems but it seems that the complaints concerning library affairs have been falling on deaf ears.

The furniture is also broken and power supply situation is also bad due of defective wiring. Most books are outdated and covered with dust. The library building is run down and has not been repaired for years.

The library lacks proper sitting arrangements, drinking water and washroom facilities for the visitors. Criticising the town administration for not revamping the library and visitors urged the authorities to take immediate steps for the repair of the building and arrangements for new furniture and new books.

They also demanded that both the provincial and city governments be approached for procurement of textbooks. In this regard, they pointed out that the Sindh government’s education department planned to procure books worth Rs23 million for libraries in colleges and schools.

Arguing that lack of funds cannot be an excuse for apathy and negligence, the readers call for a through probe into the affairs of the library.

When contacted, the town nazim admitted that the library had been a victim of neglect and assured that steps would be taken to improve its condition. He said that he had recently written a letter to the city nazim and concerned provincial authorities for provision of textbooks.
