KARACHI, Dec 19: The death toll in the consumption of spurious liquor in a shanty town of Clifton has risen to six with two more deaths. Three victims are still in a serious condition in the Jinnah Hospital.

“We have arrested the rickshaw driver who supplied the liquor and have registered an FIR 578/2006”, TPO Clifton SP Azad Khan said adding that police are trying to trace the source of the liquor.

SP Azad Khan said the body of the sixth victim was not brought to the hospital; they had directly sent the body to Mirpurkhas.

Since they live in a close neighborhood of KMC Compound located behind the driving license branch, the same person used to supply them with liquor, SP said.

“Actually they had consumed liquor on Sunday evening, but it was only when their condition turned critical they came to Jinnah Hospital on Monday afternoon”, TPO Clifton said.

Apart from the couple, Kamla, 50 and Lakshman, 70, the rest of the victim’s are neighbors who had consumed the liquor from the same supply.

As the victim’s were not in a position to afford funeral ceremony, the area nazim took up the responsibility for them, the senior police officer informed.
