PESHAWAR, Dec 13: A naib-qasid in the Intelligence Bureau, accused of planting explosives near the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, was sent to judicial lock-up on Wednesday after he refused to make a confession before a local court.

Earlier, the accused, Mohammad Tufail, was produced before the anti-terrorism court after completion of his remand with the local police. An inspector of the Special Investigation Unit, Hayat Khan, informed the presiding officer about the IB man’s willingness to record his confession.

The presiding officer directed that he should be taken to the judicial magistrate for recording his statement. However, when he was taken to the court of Magistrate Aurangzeb Khan, he declined to confess anything.

The accused told the journalists in the courtroom that he was tortured while in police custody. Two FIRs were registered against the accused on Dec 5 in East Cant police station: one under Section 5 of the Explosive Substance Act and Anti-Terrorism Act, charging him of planting explosives; and, the other one under Section 224 (resisting arrest by a person), Section 225 (resisting arrest of another person) and Section 201 (destroying evidence) of Pakistan Penal Code.

In the second case a joint director of IB, Zafarullah Khan, was also nominated charging him of illegally taking away the accused along with the recovered explosive stick.
