HARIPUR, Feb 16: Members of the Haripur district council have called upon the provincial government to set up a girls college in the city.

The demand came in a resolution adopted unanimously at the session held with Riaz Khan Jadoon, the convener, in the chair. The resolution was moved by Khurshid Anwar Khan, Nazim of the Ali Khan union council, and backed by all the members.

The resolution said that due to shortage of seats, classrooms and teaching staff at the district’s lone girls degree college, many admission seekers are deprived of their right every year. When the other districts have more than two girls colleges why the people of Haripur should not be provide with the facility? the mover asked.

If the government faced any financial or space problem it could start classes in the hostel building of Elementary College which was lying almost unused for years, Mr Anwar suggested.

During his stint as chief minister, Sardar Mehtab Ahmad Khan, now behind bars in a wheat scandal case, had issued directives for establishment of a girls college at the site of old Dak Bungalow. However, due to some wrangling over the selection of the land and later dissolution of the provincial government, the project was delayed.

The house passed another resolution moved by Mr Anwar demanding of the government to allow the members of the local bodies for taking part in the October election without tendering resignations.
