KARACHI, Dec 1: City Nazim Mustafa Kamal has expressed dissatisfaction over the state of cleanliness in Gulberg Town and directed the concerned authorities to ensure presence of its 560 sanitary workers on all roads of the town.

Addressing a joint meeting of the officials and the town council, the nazim took serious notice regarding the poor sanitary condition in Gulberg Town. He said the town administration was paying Rs2.7 million per month as salaries to 560 sanitary workers but the overall cleanliness condition was not up to the mark.

He directed the authorities concerned to ensure attendance of all sanitary workers and keep a check on their performance. He said all sanitary workers should wear a similar jacket inscribed with the town’s name so that people could identify them easily.

Mr Kamal warned that stern action would be taken against the concerned Town Officer (Infrastructure) if the cleanliness condition could not improve in their respective towns.

He said the town should induct more staff on contract basis to meet their requirement if it was facing shortage of staff.

The nazim also took serious notice of the slow pace of work on water and sewerage project, which was initiated with Rs50 million given to each town by the city government. He directed the concerned officials to accelerate the pace of work and ensure that pipelines of water and sewerage should be laid down before carpeting of roads and streets.

He said the city government started dozens of mega projects. Bridges and flyovers were being completed in record time to reduce the traffic problems and benefit the citizens, he added.

He informed the meeting that the city government would construct roads on both sides of the Gujjar Nullah on the pattern of Lyari Expressway to benefit residents of Liaquatabad, Gulberg and Gulshan-i-Iqbal towns.

Meanwhile, addressing a public meeting in Husainabad, the nazim said the city government and town administration had set up camp under the public coordination campaign to resolve public grievances on immediate basis and issues relating to computerised national identity card (CNICs) and civic administration.

Gulberg Town Nazim Masood Hayat, Town Naib Nazim Sohail Zaidi and other officials attended the meeting.
