MARDAN, Nov 22: Over 1,000 literacy centres have been opened in Mardan district over the past four years from where 10,592 people have learnt how to read and write.

This was stated by district literacy officer of the National Commission for Human Development, Arif Khan Hoti, while talking to this correspondent.

Mr Hoti claimed that the NCHD was playing a significant role in extending spreading literacy among men and women.

He said that in the current seventh phase of its programme, which was launched in July, some 250 adult literacy centres had been opened in Mardan district, 84 in five union councils of Mardan tehsil and 166 in six UCs of Takhtbhai tehsil.

He said that 6,061 illiterate people had been enrolled in the centres, 24 per cent of them male and 59 per cent female in Mardan tehsil whereas in Takhtbhai, all the learners were female. After the completion of a three-month course, he added, they would be able to solve mathematical questions.
