ISLAMABAD, Nov 1: Twenty one matches were decided on Wednesday in the Arif Habib Subh-e-Nau National Clay Court Tennis Championships 2006 being played at the Islamabad Club. Aqeel Khan, M. Shafiq, Tanveer Ashiq, Rashid Malik and Jalil Khan all moved into the quarterfinals by beating their respective opponents in straight sets.

Top seed Aqeel Khan proved too good for Shahid Khan, winning 6-1,6-1. He will face Muhammad Shafiq in the quarter-final tomorrow. Rashid Malik beat Munir Ashiq in straight set 6-2, 6-1 and will face Tanveer Ashiq who pulled off a major upset on Tuesday when he beat Nomi Qamar.

Men’s Singles: Aqeel Khan beat Shahid Khan 6-1,6-1; M. Shafiq beat Shahid Afridi 6-4,6-3; Tanveer Ashiq beat Ikramul Haq 6-3,6-3; Rashid Malik beat Munir Ashiq 6-2,6-1; Jalil Khan beat Umair Qayum 6-3,6-1.

Ladies Singles: Ushna Sohail beat Shahida Farooq 6-2,6-4; Ameena Hamid beat Quratul Ain 6-0,6-2; Zahra Omer beat Hira Arshad 6-0,6-0.—Agencies
